Sweden has a long history in the marine industry

Sweden has a strong boating industry that provides export income and jobs, especially in sparsely populated areas. There is a strong and growing interest from boaters in our neighbouring countries to spend their holidays in Swedish waters and ports, which is also an important and growing source of income.

With this in mind, it is not difficult to understand that boating means a great deal to many Swedish regions, companies and practitioners and that Sweden can rightly be called a great boating country.

A living archipelago that is open and accessible to all through the right of public access and beach protection provides excellent conditions for a rich boating life. Free fishing with hand nets along our coasts and in the Great Lakes provides additional value.

Swedes are interested in boating and boating is one of the largest popular movements. One third of the country's adult population travels by recreational boat at least once a season.

GOOD GEOGRAPHY FOR BOATING
From Haparanda in the north to Svinesund in the west, Sweden has a coastline of 2 700 km. If you count all the bays, capes and islands, the coastline is 8 000 km. That's one-fifth of a revolution around the Earth. Sweden has some of the world's largest archipelagos, with a total of over 60 000 islands. The Stockholm archipelago alone has 30 000 islands. The country has 95 000 navigable lakes and 1 000 km of canals. More than 8.5% of the country's surface is covered by lakes and rivers.

BOATING IN THE WORLD
Sweden is one of the countries in the world with the largest amount of recreational boats. The number of adults per recreational boat is about thirteen in our country. Only our Nordic neighbours Norway and Finland have a similar density of boats, 7.7 and 8 people per recreational boat respectively. By comparison, there are 25 people per recreational boat in the USA, 33 in the Netherlands, 124 in France, 236 in Spain.*
